history

The road was dedicated in 1959 as a state road between Milan and the state border at Ponte Tresa and was given the number 233 and the name "Varesina". The section between Milan and Varese was later de- dedicated and downgraded to a provincial road.

The SS 233 starts in Varese and runs through the Valganna and the Val Marchirolo in a northerly direction to the state border at Ponte Tresa . Originally the road started in Milan and reached Varese via Saronno and Tradate .
