The Strada Statale 14 della Venezia Giulia (abbreviation: SS 14 ) is an Italian state road in northern Italy with supraregional significance, which runs from Venice to Trieste near the Adriatic Sea and reaches the Slovenian border at San Dorligo della Valle . Here it is connected to the Slovenian expressway network. It is 167 km long and runs through the two Italian regions of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia .

History

Until the end of the Second World War , the SS 14 continued from Trieste to the port city of Fiume in present-day Croatia . In the interwar period, Fiume was first an independent free state and then part of Italy. Before the opening of the Venice-Trieste motorway section of the Italian A4, the SS 14 was the most important traffic artery in this area. It is still called "Triestina" in Veneto today, although this epithet was officially given to Strada Statale 202 Triestina.

course

The SS 14 starts in Venice and goes straight along the Venice lagoon to Musile di Piave , where it turns north and then reaches San Donà di Piave . Then it leads slightly northeast via Ceggia and San Stino di Livenza to Portogruaro , where it leads through the city. That is why the Portogruaro bypass is currently being built to reduce traffic jams.

After Portogruaro it leads straight and undeveloped to the Tagliamento, where it takes the road from Bibione and then leads to Latisana at a large bridge over the Tagliamento . At the end of the village it meets the SS 354 , which leads to Lignano .

The other places to Monfalcone are Pallazolo della Stella , San Giorgio di Nogaro , Cervignano and San Canzian d'Isonzo , whereby the road leads first slightly northeast and then slightly southeast.

At Monfalcone the road reaches the Karst Mountains and then runs as Strada Costiera Trieste directly along the Trieste Riviera past the following places: Sistiana , Duino and Grignano . This street is known for its wonderful views, such as the Miramare Castle or the Duinese castles. In the Karst, it runs through a series of rock tunnels built during the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The route then leads through Trieste and then to the Slovenian border, where it continues as the H5 . In 2007 and 2008 the Italian expressway was connected to the Slovenian expressway.
