The State Road 20 (SS20) is an Italian national road , which, in 1928 by France interrupted between the SS10 in Moncalieri and Ventimiglia has been set. Because of its course through the road tunnel under the Col de Tende and through the Roja Valley, it has the title del Colle di Tenda e di Valle Roja . In France it was linked by national roads 204 and 204 B , established in 1860 and 1875 respectively . These are now continuously numbered D6204 and are counted when the road is continuously kilometered, so that the length of the SS20 is sometimes given as 150.85 kilometers.

The SS20 goes back to the Strada nazionale 42 established in 1923. In 1947, after the Second World War, the border with France was redrawn. This shortened it by about 23 kilometers. Their total length (excluding the French interruption) was 111.4 kilometers from that point in time. By a law of 1998 it was downgraded to Strada regional between Moncalieri and Cuneo in 2001. This section became Strada provinciale in 2008, which was given the suffix R in the number . As a result, the previous SP20 del Campo Esperienze was also renamed SP720.

In 1991 it was moved to an eastern bypass around la Loggia; 1992 the same for Carignano. In 1995 the north-east bypass of Roccavione and Robilante went into operation. Airole has been bypassed since 1996. Two tunnels were created for this. At the moment, a second road tunnel is being built at the Tende, as the existing one can only be used for two-way traffic for cars and motorbikes due to its profile, and one-way traffic for trucks at times.
