Ventimiglia is a city in northern Italy in the province of Imperia in Liguria with 24,342 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

The border town with France (the French name of the town is Vintimille ) is on the Riviera . It is located west of Bordighera and Vallecrosia , with whose settlement area it has largely grown together. The short form XXmiglia is often found on street signs (the part of the name Venti means twenty, as well as XX as a Roman number ).

The place is the seat of the diocese Ventimiglia-Sanremo , seaside resort and health resort.

history

In the mountains west of the city near Grimaldi di Ventimiglia are the caves of Balzi Rossi , in which the remains of prehistoric people have been found.

Before 180 BC The Ligurian people of the Intemeli lived here after whom the Romans named their town Albium Intemelium , which later became Albintimilium . (The name Ventimiglia etymologically has nothing to do with "venti" = twenty , but is a folk etymological transformation of the Roman name.)

The place was an important station on the Via Julia Augusta to Gaul . Parts of the city wall, city gates (from 70 to 50 BC), remains of the thermal baths of Augustus and the amphitheater (2nd to 3rd century AD) are still preserved from this time .

In the 10th century, Ventimiglia was ravaged several times by the Saracens . From the 10th century, the city was the capital of a county of the Counts of Ventimiglia . The city was independent until 1505. Then it fell under the rule of Genoa and belonged to the Kingdom of Sardinia since 1814 .

As a result of the refugee and migration movements across the Mediterranean Sea, Ventimiglia is confronted with the fate of numerous people who have been refused entry to France.

Attractions

Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta , built around 1000 and dedicated to the Assumption of Mary , with its octagonal baptistery and portal from 1222 , is worth seeing. The Church of San Michele, built in the 10th century, was once the family chapel of the counts from Ventimiglia. Renovations took place in the 11th and 12th centuries; the apse and the campanile were built. Under the church there is a pre-Romanesque hall crypt , the vault of which is supported by columns. One column was a Roman milestone, and two more granite columns are said to belong to the remains of a temple dedicated to Castor and Pollux . The old Piedmont gate from the 16th century with its antique wooden wings and nailed iron fittings marks the beginning of the road to the Tenda Pass , which connects Liguria with Piedmont.

The Roia River divides the old town from the rest of the city to the west. In the urban area it is spanned by two road bridges, a railway bridge and a pedestrian bridge, and further north by the A 10 motorway bridge. The large Friday market and the flower market are also worth seeing. Just before the border with France, at Capo Mortola, is the Hanbury Botanical Garden .
