history
The city on the Riviera, third largest in Liguria, was settled early on. The village of the Sabatians, their ancient name was Savo, was located near today's city . The importance of the settlement during the Roman Empire was only minor. There was only one exchange station on Via Aemilia Scauri . In 639 Savona was destroyed by the Lombards and re-established as a fortified place in the 8th century. In the 9th century the city became the seat of a bishop . It was not until the end of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance that the city-state of Savona formed an important trading power. The Marquis of Savona took part in the First Crusade . Several popes had their power here.
Savona was less hostile to Venice than to the very nearby Genoa . In 1528 the port of the city was destroyed by Genoese ships and the city came under the rule of the Genoese through Andrea Doria . In 1745 Savona was bombed by the English in vain, but the Spanish-French fleet was destroyed. Charles Emanuel III. of Sardinia conquered the city in 1746, which was captured by the French in 1809 and made the capital of the Montenotte department. From 1809 to 1812 Pope Pius VII was imprisoned here on the orders of Napoleon . In 1815 Savona fell back to the Kingdom of Sardinia . On February 23, 1887, a violent earthquake shook the city.
After the decline, the city did not recover until the middle of the 19th century. The port is one of the five most important in Italy and handles the shipping of Fiat and Lancia car brands from nearby Turin .
Corale Alpina Savonese was founded in 1949 .
