Balestrino (in Ligurian : Barestin ) is a northern Italian municipality with 537 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Liguria region . Politically it belongs to the province of Savona .

geography

Balestrino is in the hinterland of Loano , seven kilometers from the coast of the Riviera di Ponente . The municipality includes the settlements of Borgo , Poggio Sottano , Poggio Soprano , Cuneo , Bergalla and Sambuco , which are connected to each other by roads, alleys or forest paths.

Balestrino belongs to the Comunità Montana Pollupice and is about 43 kilometers from the provincial capital Savona .

According to the Italian classification for seismic activity , the municipality was assigned to zone 3. This means that Balestrino is in a seismically less active zone.

history

The castle was built in 1515–59 for the Marchese Pirro II. Del Carretto.

Balestrino was largely abandoned in 1953 because of a feared landslide, the town center is characterized by abandoned houses. Today's residents have settled back on the outskirts of the former village.

The village was the location for the 2008 film Inkheart .

In episode 5 of the 2nd season of the documentary fiction series Future Without People ("Collapse Risk", USA 2010) about a world after the hypothetical disappearance of mankind, the processes are demonstrated using the example of Balestrino, which over time the buildings of a self Would destroy the city.
