history

Cairo Montenotte in Liguria

During the First French Empire, Savona was the capital of the French department of Montenotte . The department was created on June 6, 1805 and so named because Napoleon Bonaparte had won the battle of Montenotte on April 12, 1796 against the Austrians of General Jean-Pierre de Beaulieu . During the Second World War, Slovenian and Croatian civilians were interned in the Cairo Montenotte concentration camp in Italy .
