Pietra Ligure is an Italian tourist town with 8611 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Savona , Liguria region .
Location and dates
The municipality of Pietra Ligure is located on the coast of the Ligurian Sea between Savona in the northeast and Imperia in the southwest. It covers an area of 9 km² and belongs to the Comunità Montana Pollupice .
The neighboring municipalities are: Bardineto , Boissano , Borgio Verezzi , Giustenice , Loano and Tovo San Giacomo .
history
The name comes from the rock (Latin Petra, Italian Pietra), which lay directly on the sea in the Middle Ages and on which the castle "Castrum Petrae" (Petersburg) was built, as a Byzantine bulwark against the Longobards.
The village belonged to the Archbishops of Albenga until 1385, when it was taken over by Pope Urban VI. was sold to the Maritime Republic of Genoa .
Attractions
Today Pietra is a small town with a palm-lined promenade and beach baths that are visited by thousands of tourists every year. In addition to the sea, Pietra Ligure also has an old town that is worth seeing: wonderful palazzi from the Middle Ages and the 18th century and the parish church of San Nicoló di Bari from the 18th century with two bell towers and numerous works of art and the market square in front of the church.
