Inselburg

Castle Stalker , an island castle in Scotland

The island castle is a variant of the moated castle . It is characterized by its location on an artificial or natural island. It is a typical Niederungsburg .

Since the island on which the castle was built is separated from the shore by at least two arms of water, artificially constructed defenses such as moats or shield walls were usually not necessary, at least when the castle was surrounded by flowing water. Such castles could therefore be built quite easily and inexpensively. However, many island castles in lakes were relatively easy to conquer in winter, when a stable ice cover was available, as they were often rather weakly fortified .

Probably the most famous island castle in Germany is Pfalzgrafenstein Castle near Kaub .
