The port of Vado Ligure is administered by a regional port authority in Genoa , which is responsible for all major port facilities in western Liguria .

Vado Ligure is the largest fruit terminal on the Mediterranean (2004: 500,000 tonnes of goods handled ), and containers and RoRo goods are also handled (2004: 800,000 tonnes). Mainly coal is unloaded at the bulk material jetty at Terminal Rinfuse Italia . Along with Trieste, Vado Ligure is the most important oil port in Italy. The ships can be unloaded at three piers and in a buoy field.

Ships to Corsica and Sardinia leave from the Forship ferry terminal (2004: 350,000 passengers). Also Corsica Ferries has settled here and has a terminal built.

A new container terminal went into operation in February 2020. For this purpose, a 250,000 m² multifunctional platform was built into the sea. There was resistance from environmental circles because the new terminal would increase the dust pollution in the settlements.

Thermal power plant

Power plant in Vado Ligure

In the sixties, Enel began building a thermal power plant that went into operation from 1970–1971. The four blocks with the two chimneys over a hundred meters high could be fired with either heavy fuel oil or coal and together had an output of 1320 MW. From 1997 to 1999, units “3” and “4” were equipped with flue gas desulphurisation systems , denitrification systems and electrostatic precipitators for environmental reasons .

The power plant was taken over by Tirreno Power in 2002 - a company that was created as a result of the liberalization of the Italian electricity market imposed by the EU.

From 2005, the conversion of units 1 and 2 into natural gas -fired gas turbine units began, which are to be operated together with the existing coal units as a combined cycle power plant . The first gas turbine block went back into operation in 2007. When the conversion of the entire power plant is completed, it will have an output of 1420 MW.

Locomotive factory

Westinghouse opened a factory to manufacture electric locomotives in Vado Ligure in 1905 . In 1919 the plant was taken over by Tecnomasio Italia Brown Boveri - a company that became the Swiss company Brown, Boveri & Cie. -Group belonged. After the merger of Brown, Boveri & Cie with Asea in 1988 and the merging of the rail division with AEG , the plant became ABB Daimler Benz Transportation Adtranz Italy , which, like the other activities of Adtranz, was transferred to the Canadian Bombardier Transportation in 2001 . The locomotive factory mainly produces E.464 locomotives for the Trenitalia and Traxx locomotives.
