Altare (in Ligurian : Artâ ) is an Italian commune with 2001 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the Liguria region . Politically, it is in the province of Savona .

The old town of Altare

Altare lies in the Val Bormida of the Ligurian Apennines . On the territory of the municipality, at the end of Viale de Caroli , there is the Bocchetta di Altare . This marks the border between the Ligurian Alps and the Apennines . Altare is about 14 kilometers away from the provincial capital Savona . The highest point in the municipality is the Bric Baraccone at 821 meters above sea level. Another important highlight is the Monte Burot (745 meters) on the summit of which there is a fortress from the 19th century. The Bormida , a tributary of the Tanaro, flows near Altare .

The municipality belongs to the Comunità Montana Alta Val Bormida .
