Giuseppe Cardinal Pizzardo (born July 13, 1877 in Savona , Italy , † August 1, 1970 in Rome ) was a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Giuseppe Pizzardo studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Savona and Rome . He received on 19 September 1903, the sacrament of the priesthood and, after further studies as a priest in Rome. In 1908 he joined the diplomatic service of the Vatican . He worked for the Apostolic Nunciature in Bavaria and in the Vatican State Secretariat . From 1920 he worked for the curia in the field of special church affairs . In 1923 he became ecclesiastical advisor to Catholic Action in Italy, and in 1929 secretary of the Curia for special ecclesiastical affairs.

Pope Pius XI appointed Giuseppe Pizzardo in 1930 titular Archbishop of Nicaea . He was ordained bishop by Cardinal Secretary of State Eugenio Pacelli, who later became Pope Pius XII. ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Giuseppe Palica and Archbishop Francesco Marchetti Selvaggiani , secretary of the Congregation Propaganda Fide . In 1934, Pizzardo was appointed head of the Pontifical Commission for Russia . In 1936 Pius XI appointed him. to the papal assistant throne , in 1937 he sent him as papal legate for the coronation of King George VI. to Great Britain . On December 13, 1937, he accepted him as a cardinal priest pro hac vice with the title diaconia Santa Maria in Via Lata in the college of cardinals . After his death, Cardinal Pizzardo took part in the 1939 conclave . Pope Pius XII appointed Giuseppe Pizzardo in 1939 cardinal prefect of the congregation for seminaries and universities. In 1948 he was raised to Cardinal Bishop of Albano . From 1951 to 1959 he was secretary of the Holy Office . Cardinal Pizzardo participated in the 1958 conclave and the 1963 conclave .

He died in Rome on August 1, 1970 and was buried in the Church of Saint Joseph in Frattocchie di Marino near the Italian capital. At the time of his death, he was the oldest cardinal in the world.
