Situational context

When the previous Pope died, the Second Vatican Council , which he convened, was in full swing. Thus came the death of John XXIII. unexpected for many. Care was taken to secure the future of the Council's work. A person was therefore sought who had the strength to complete the council without leaving the path of the old Pope.

course

The conclave lasted two days and had six ballots. The favorites for the Holy See were Giacomo Lercaro and the future Pope Giovanni Montini. Both corresponded to the requirement profile of the assembled cardinals, which at least Montini had confirmed shortly before by statements. Montini ultimately prevailed because Cardinal Lercaro said he was in poor health. According to the French church historian Philippe Levillain, 60 out of 80 cardinals voted for the future pope in the last ballot.
