Framework
Participating cardinals
80 of the 82 eligible cardinals were present at the conclave . It was thus the conclave with the largest number of participants in history. Most of the cardinals were still from Italy, France and Spain (43 in total). Nevertheless, this conclave, with a total of 29 different countries of origin, was more international than the previous ones. Only 2 cardinals did not participate. It was the last papal election to which all cardinals were entitled to vote: in 1970 Paul VI led. the age limit of 80 years.

Absent cardinals
The following cardinals did not take part in the conclave:
-
József Mindszenty ( Hungary ) was absent for political reasons
-
Carlos María de la Torre ( Ecuador ) was absent for health reasons
Situational context
When the previous Pope died, the Second Vatican Council , which he convened, was in full swing. Thus came the death of John XXIII. unexpected for many. Care was taken to secure the future of the Council's work. A person was therefore sought who had the strength to complete the council without leaving the path of the old Pope.
course
The conclave lasted two days and had six ballots. The favorites for the Holy See were Giacomo Lercaro and the future Pope Giovanni Montini. Both corresponded to the requirement profile of the assembled cardinals, which at least Montini had confirmed shortly before by statements. Montini ultimately prevailed because Cardinal Lercaro said he was in poor health. According to the French church historian Philippe Levillain, 60 out of 80 cardinals voted for the future pope in the last ballot.
