Election of the Pope in 1130
The papal election of 1130 , during which Cardinal Gregorio Papareschi was elected Pope Innocent II , led to a schism on the same day that lasted for eight years and only ended with the death of the antipope Anaklet II . The election took place in the Roman church of Santi Andrea e Gregorio al Monte Celio .
Death of Honorius II and the course of the election
Pope Honorius II was a terminally ill man in February 1130 and finally died on February 13 in the monastery of San Gregorio. The powerful Cardinal Haimericus , who was Chancellor of the Holy Roman Church at the time , took advantage of this fact . He was interested in bringing the cardinal protodeacon Gregorio Papareschi to the papal throne. However, there was a rule to wait until the predecessor was buried before electing a pope. Haimerich therefore came up with a macabre trick: while the Pope was still alive, he had a grave dug in San Gregorio, in which the dead Honorius was immediately buried.
Now the way was clear for the papal election. As planned by Haimerich, the 16 cardinals elected Gregorio Papareschi, who called himself Innocent II. Haimerich's cardinals then moved with the new Pope and Honorius to the Lateran Church, where the deceased was buried again.
The competing noble family Pierleoni and their partisans in the College of Cardinals, who were in the majority, did not accept this secret election and on the same day elected Cardinal Pietro Pierleoni, who now called himself Anaclet II. After the election, he should succeed in driving Innocent II from Rome.
