The diocese Ostia ( Latin Dioecesis Ostiensis ) is a suburbicarian diocese and as such belongs to the ecclesiastical province of Rome .
The diocese was founded in the 3rd century. In 1150 it was united with the diocese of Velletri to form the Dioecesis Ostiensis-Veliterna, but in 1914 it was again separated into the original dioceses. The office of Cardinal Bishop of Ostia is linked to that of Dean of the College of Cardinals . The diocese of Ostia is since Pius XII. co-administered by the Cardinal Vicar as Apostolic Administrator (currently Angelo De Donatis ).
