Angelo Cardinal De Donatis (born January 4, 1954 in Casarano , Province of Lecce , Italy ) is an Italian clergyman and since 2017 Vicar General of the Diocese of Rome . At the same time he is archpriest of the Lateran basilica .

Life

Angelo De Donati's first attended the seminary in Taranto and later the Pontifical Roman Seminary . He studied philosophy at the Pontifical Lateran University and Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University , where he also obtained a licentiate in moral theology .

On April 12, 1980 he was ordained a priest for the diocese of Nardò-Gallipoli and was incardinated on November 28, 1983 in the clergy of the diocese of Rome . From 1980 to 1983 he was an auxiliary chaplain in the parish of San Saturnino and religious teacher and then until 1988 chaplain of this parish. From 1988 to 1990 he worked in the General Secretariat of the Vicariate of Rome and worked for the Auxiliary Bishop Giovanni Marra . At the same time he was chaplain in the parish of Santissima Annunziata a Grottaperfetta and from 1989 to 1991 archivist in the secretariat of the College of Cardinals . From 1990 to 1996 he was director of the clergy office in the Vicariate of the Diocese of Rome. Furthermore, from 1990 to 2003 he was spiritual at the Pontifical Roman Seminary. Since 2003 he has been pastor of the parish of San Marco Evangelista al Campidoglio .

De Donatis is a member of the Council of Priests and the College of Consultors of the Diocese of Rome. Pope John Paul II awarded him the honorary title of chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) on April 10, 1990 .

On 14 September 2015 it appointed Pope Francis to the titular bishop of Motula and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Rome. The Pope personally donated his episcopal ordination on November 9, 2015 in the Lateran Basilica ; Co-consecrators were the cardinals Agostino Vallini and Beniamino Stella .

On May 26, 2017, Francis appointed him as successor to Cardinal Vallini and at the same time elevation to Archbishop Vicar General of Rome.

In the consistory of 28 June 2018 it took Pope Francis as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Marco , whose priest he was, in the College of Cardinals on. On October 6 of the same year the Pope appointed him a member of the Congregation for the Clergy . On July 8, 2019, the Pope appointed him a member of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life for five years .

On July 11, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Administrator of the Apostolic Exarchate for Ukrainian Catholics in Italy, which was established on the same date .

Since 1989 he has been a member of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . In 2017, Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick O'Brien was appointed Grand Cross Knight.
