The Church of San Marco , completely Basilica di San Marco Evangelista al Campidoglio ( Latin : Sancti Marci ) is a minor basilica and titular church in Rome . It is the regional church of the Venetians .

It is located in the Piazza San Marco and is almost completely surrounded by the Palazzo Venezia , the former Roman settlement of the Serenissima Repubblica di San Marco . The cloister of the church is also the courtyard of the palazzo.

history

The church was founded by the Roman bishop Marcus between 337 and 340 in place of an older oratory and rebuilt between 827 and 844 under Pope Gregory IV . When the Palazzo Venezia was built in the 15th century, the church was significantly changed again. The Renaissance facade was probably designed by Giuliano da Maiano . The interior of the church was restored in Baroque style by Filippo Barigioni from 1740 to 1750 .

Furnishing

inner space

The mosaic in the apse dates from the 9th century and shows Christ in a dark robe, his right hand raised as a blessing. In his left hand he is holding an open book on which the words "Ego sum lux, ego sum vita, ego sum resurrectio" (I am the light, I am the life, I am the resurrection) can be seen. To the right of Christ are Pope Marcus (with chasuble and pallium), St. Agapitus and St. To see agnes . On the left is St. Felicissimus , Mark the Evangelist and Pope Gregory IV . Since the latter was still alive at the time the mosaic was made, it is depicted with a square halo .

The coffered ceiling was created by Giovannino and Marco de 'Dolci in the 15th century. In the vestibule there are several early Christian tombstones, as well as the tombstone of Vanozza de 'Cattanei , the lover of Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia .

Today's cardinal priest Angelo De Donatis was pastor of the parish of San Marco until 2014.
