Gregory IV (* in Rome ; † January 25, 844 ibid) was Pope from 827 to 844. He was elected in October 827 in the Roman church of Santi Cosma e Damiano and obtained the consent of the Frankish emperor before his consecration.

During his pontificate there were serious conflicts in the Franconian Empire . Louis the Pious had divided the empire among his three sons from his first marriage. After a son ( Charles the Bald ) had been born to him by his second wife in 823 , he changed the division of the empire in its favor.

The attempt by Louis the Pious to surrender Pippin's dominion Aquitaine to Charles, led in 833 to the uprising of all three older sons. Pope Gregory traveled across the Alps and tried in vain to find an amicable settlement. Finally, at the end of June 833, the armies of the opposing parties faced each other on the Rothfeld near Colmar for days without a battle. Pope Gregory IV led negotiations with the sons from the emperor's army camp , but at the same time they succeeded in gradually getting the emperor's supporters to their side. Lothar I , Ludwig's eldest son, was able to win over the Pope. Ludwig was deposed, the Pope realized that he had been abused as a puppet.

Gregory IV sent St. Ansgar as a missionary to Scandinavia, which initiated the Christianization of the Normans . In the Byzantine Empire , the iconoclasm ended at this time . In addition, Gregor Allerheiligen , which has been celebrated in the Eastern Church since Pope Boniface IV , has set it on November 1st for the entire Western Church on the Sunday after Pentecost . Gregory died in Rome on January 25, 844.

Pope Gregory IV is considered to be the originator of the Gregorius Festival .
