Boniface IV

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boniface IV (* unknown, in Valenia ( Abruzzo ); † May 25, 615 in Rome ?) Was Pope from 608 to 615.

Boniface was the son of a doctor. He was a monk in the Benedictine order , but nothing more is known about his theological training. He entered the service of the Pope and was installed by Pope Gregory I in the office of dispenser . On September 15 (according to a different information August 25) 608 Boniface succeeded Pope Boniface III, who died on November 12, 607 . It is thanks to his friendly relations with Emperor Phocas of the Eastern Roman Empire that the Church was given the Pantheon , a rotunda dedicated to the Mother of Gods Cybele and all gods, and was able to consecrate it to the Mother of God and all martyrs. Boniface had 28 carts with bones brought from the catacombs of Rome to the new church. At the same time he founded the church festival of All Saints for Christendom .

During his pontificate Boniface strove to proselytize England and to regulate the ecclesiastical customs there. He also maintained good relations with the Gallic Church.

His feast day is May 8th.
