1842: Christian Doppler
  • 1842 : The Austrian physicist Christian Doppler gives his treatise on the colored light of the double stars and some other stars in the sky , which predicts the Doppler effect , to the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences in Prague .
  • 1928 : On Umberto Nobiles' second trip to the North Pole , the airship Italia, used for research purposes, crashes in bad weather. The driver's gondola is torn off when it hits an ice floe, and a man dies. The now uncontrolled hull of the airship drifts up again with six crew members on board and remains lost. Days later, almost all of the dead were rescued, most of them by the Soviet icebreaker Krasin .

  • 1961 : During the space race in the American Congress, the American President John F. Kennedy announces the program of a manned flight to the moon, with which "before the end of the decade a person is to be brought to the moon and safely back to earth" - the later Apollo Program .
  • 1969 : The Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl starts with his crew on the papyrus boat Ra from Safi in Morocco to cross the Atlantic . He wants to show a possible settlement of America. The expedition has to be abandoned on July 20th before reaching the destination Barbados because the boat becomes unstable.
