- 1013 : Heinrich II enfeoffs Boleslaw of Poland with the ( Lower ) Lusatia and the Milzenerland (today's Upper Lusatia ). Through this, and through rich gifts from Boleslaw, the peace of Merseburg is sealed.
- 1085 : Alfonso VI. of Castile and León conquered Toledo and for the first time led the Reconquista in Spain to the core areas of the Moorish Al-Andalus .
- 1420 : The Portuguese Prince Henry the Navigator is appointed governor of the Order of Christ by means of a papal bull by Martin V.
- 1521 : The Reichstag in Worms comes to an end after just under four months with the Reichs Farewell . However, some of the imperial estates stayed in Worms to pass the Worms Edict the next day .
- 1659 : Oliver Cromwell's son Richard is asked by Parliament to abdicate as Lord Protector of England , Scotland and Ireland and he does so without hesitation. This clears the way for the Stuart restoration almost a year later.
- 1720 : The plague is brought into Marseille by a ship arriving from Syria . It then spreads in Provence . In the following year, a plague wall was built for reasons of protection , but the epidemic also reached Avignon .
- 1787 : The Philadelphia Convention meets to discuss improvements to the Articles of Confederation . The United States Constitution emerges from the work of the delegates .
- 1810 : Armed citizens of the city of Buenos Aires under Juan José Castelli and Nicolás Rodríguez Peña expel Viceroy Baltasar de Cisneros and proclaim the Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata during the May Revolution in the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata . Although the government declaration includes an oath of allegiance to Ferdinand VII of Spain , who was deposed by Napoleon , this is considered to be the beginning of Argentina's independence .
- 1895 : In protest against the Shimonoseki Treaty , in which the defeated China in the First Sino-Japanese War had to cede the island of Taiwan to Japan , forces loyal to China under Tang Jingsong declare the island's independence and proclaim the Republic of Formosa .
- 1913 : Alfred Redl , deputy head of the Austro-Hungarian intelligence service , takes his own life after discovering his espionage activities for Russia.

- 1926 : The Jewish anarchist Scholom Schwartzbard shoots the head of the Ukrainian government-in-exile, Symon Petlyura , in Paris . He is later acquitted by a jury. In the course of the negotiation, the human rights organization Ligue Internationale Contre le Racisme et l'Antisémitisme was created .
- 1945 : The Yugoslav People's Army of Josip Broz Tito , placed under Soviet command at the urging of the British government, completes its withdrawal from Carinthia , which began on May 19 .

- 1842 : The Austrian physicist Christian Doppler gives his treatise on the colored light of the double stars and some other stars in the sky , which predicts the Doppler effect , to the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences in Prague .
- 1928 : On Umberto Nobiles' second trip to the North Pole , the airship Italia, used for research purposes, crashes in bad weather. The driver's gondola is torn off when it hits an ice floe, and a man dies. The now uncontrolled hull of the airship drifts up again with six crew members on board and remains lost. Days later, almost all of the dead were rescued, most of them by the Soviet icebreaker Krasin .
- 1961 : During the space race in the American Congress, the American President John F. Kennedy announces the program of a manned flight to the moon, with which "before the end of the decade a person is to be brought to the moon and safely back to earth" - the later Apollo Program .
- 1969 : The Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl starts with his crew on the papyrus boat Ra from Safi in Morocco to cross the Atlantic . He wants to show a possible settlement of America. The crash of American Airlines Flight 191 is the most serious aviation accident in the United States to date .
- 1985 : Bangladesh is hit by a cyclone and a storm surge . Between 10,000 and 40,000 people die.
