Charles took over the coat of arms of his father Philip II. It shows the coat of arms of the descendants of the Valois family and the coat of arms of the Counts of Flanders , from whose heirs Nevers and Rethel came.

Charles of Burgundy or Karl I of Nevers from the House of Valois-Burgundy (* 1414 in Clamecy ; † May 25, 1464 ) was Count of Nevers and Rethel between 1415 and 1464 . He was the son of Philip II of Nevers and Bonne d'Artois .

After his father's death in the Battle of Azincourt in 1415, he succeeded his father as Count of Nevers and Rethel. First he was under the tutelage of his mother, then of Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy. As soon as he came of age, he approached the King of France, who was in opposition to the Dukes of Valois-Burgundy. On the side of the king he took part in campaigns in Normandy (1449-1450) and Guyenne (1451-1453).

On June 11, 1456, he married Marie d'Albret († 1486), the daughter of Charles II. D'Albret and Anne d'Armagnac. This marriage remained childless.

An illegitimate daughter arose from a relationship with Jolanda von Logon, whom he legitimized in 1463:

  • Adrienne of Nevers; ∞ Claude de Rochefort, later ∞ on May 10, 1466 Jacques de Clugny († 1512).

Since Adrienne remained childless and Karl left no heir, he was followed as Count of Nevers and Rethel by a younger brother, Johann von Clamency as Johann II, Count of Nevers and Rethel.
