Philip of Burgundy from the Burgundian sideline of the House of Valois , as Philip II. Count of Nevers (* December 1389 in Villaines-en-Duesmois , † October 25, 1415 in the Battle of Azincourt ) was the son of Duke Philip II of Burgundy and Margarete de Dampierre , Countess of Flanders, Burgundy, Nevers and Rethel. Philip founded the Burgundy-Nevers sideline of the House of Burgundy.

After the death of his father Philip "the Bold", his eldest son Johann "Unefurcht" inherited the Duchy of Burgundy in 1404. This gave his younger brother Philipp in 1405 the county of Nevers as Paragium . The middle brother Anton had already received the county of Rethel in 1393/1402 . When Anton received the duchies of Brabant and Limburg by inheritance, he passed his Paragium Rethel on to Philip in 1407.

Philip supported his older brother Johann "Fearless" in the civil war of the Armagnacs and Bourguignons , but did not follow him in his alliance with the English King Henry V , who landed in France in 1415 with English troops. Philip fought and fell in the French army at the battle of Azincourt.

Philip was married in his first marriage on April 9, 1409 to Isabelle de Coucy († 1411), the Countess of Soissons and daughter of Enguerrand VII. De Coucy from the House of Ghent . This marriage resulted in two children who, however, died early:

  • Philipp (* 1410; † between 1411 and 1415)
  • Margarete (* 1411; † between 1411 and 1412)

His second marriage was on June 20, 1413, with Bonne d'Artois († 1425), daughter of Philip of Artois , Count of Eu . This marriage also had two children:

  • Charles I (1414–1464), after the death of his father Count von Nevers and Rethel
  • Johann de Clamecy (1415–1491), 1442 Count of Étampes, after the death of Charles I as Johann II. 1464 Count of Nevers and Rethel, from 1472 also Count of Eu after the death of Johann von Artois.

The coat of arms of Philip of Burgundy-Nevers was created from the combination of the coat of arms of the Valois as Count of Tours , which went back to Philip the Bold , and the coat of arms of Flanders, which referred to Margaret of Flanders , from whose inheritance Philip the counties Nevers and Rethel received.
