Gent (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The house of the burgraves of Ghent was a family of the Belgian and French nobility . It first appeared as the Burgrave of Ghent at the beginning of the 11th century. The loss of the burgraviate was compensated by the acquisition of the county of Guînes in 1142. Guînes in turn was lost in 1331, while the Coucy reign was acquired around the same time .

The best-known member of the family is Enguerrand VII. De Coucy (1339-1397), Earl of Bedford , Count of Soissons and son-in-law of the English King Edward III. The family died out with his daughters in 1411.

Another family was called "von Gent" and was probably closely related to the Burgraves of Ghent, although this has not yet been specified. It includes the Lords and Counts of Aalst, but above all Gilbert de Gant, 1st Earl of Lincoln and his relatives, who played an important role in England in the 12th century.
