Heinrich von Bar , sometimes also called Heinrich von Marle (French: Henri de Bar ; * 1362 ; † November 1397 in Treviso ), was a French nobleman from the ducal house of Bar . He was the eldest son and presumptive heir of Duke Robert I of Bar († 1411) and Princess Maria, a daughter of King John II of France .

Life

At a young age, Heinrich was betrothed to Isabella, a daughter of Duke Johann I of Lorraine , who then married Enguerrand VII de Coucy . He was educated at the royal court and in 1380 on the occasion of the coronation of King Charles VI. knighted. Between the years 1383 and 1388 he took part in the fighting against the rebellious Flemings. In the Duchy of Bar he temporarily took over the reign for his father, who suffered from gout . In 1383 Heinrich married the eldest daughter of Enguerrand VII. De Coucy from his first marriage. Marie de Coucy († 1405) brought him the reigns of Marle and Oisy as a dowry and was also the sole heir of her father to the great barony of Coucy and the county of Soissons , through her mother she was also a granddaughter of King Edward III . of England .

Together with his younger brother Philipp and his father-in-law, Heinrich joined Count Johann von Nevers' crusade against the Ottomans in 1396 . In the battle of Nicopolis (September 25, 1396) the crusade army was defeated, Heinrich and his relatives survived and were captured by the Ottomans. His father-in-law died there in 1397, and a little later he was released after paying a ransom. Since the ransom was provided by the Maritime Republic of Venice , Heinrich first had to settle in their national territory as a personal pledge until he could make a compensation payment to the republic . He also had to pay the ransom for his brother, who was still in custody. But before it came to that, Heinrich died of the plague . His body was transferred to the Cölestine convent in Paris . Heinrich's brother was never released; he only died years later in Ottoman captivity.

From his marriage Heinrich had a son, Robert , born around 1390, who was disinherited by his grandfather and died in 1415 at the Battle of Azincourt .
