Offemont (German earlier Offemundt ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Belfort .

geography

Offemont is 370 m above sea level, about four kilometers north-northeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the foothills of the Vosges , in a wide depression on the northern edge of the Burgundian Gate , between the Étang de la Forge in the south and the hills of the Forêt de Roppe in the north.

The area of the municipal area of 5.55 km² includes a section in the northern area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The main part of the area is occupied by the Depression of Offemont, which is two kilometers wide and averages 360 m. In this depression, which is mainly used for agriculture outside the settlement area, is the Étang de la Forge . This serves as a local recreation area and offers various opportunities for water and recreational sports. The valley is drained by the village stream from Offemont to the southwest to the Savoureuse . The valley of Offemont is flanked in the south by the elongated ridge of the Fort de la Miotte , at the northern foot of which the municipal boundary runs. To the north, the community area extends into the wooded area of the Forêt de Roppe . At 494 m, the highest point in Offemont is reached on Mont Rudolphe .

In addition to the actual village, Offemont also includes the settlements:

  • Le Martinet (375 m) on the edge of the Forêt d'Arsot
  • Cité d'Arsot (366 m) on the plain on the eastern edge of the Savoureuse Valley

Neighboring communities of Offemont are Éloie in the north, Vétrigne and Denney in the east, Belfort in the south and Valdoie in the west.

history

The municipality of Offemont was settled very early. The earliest traces of human presence date from the Neolithic . During Roman times there was a settlement here that was probably inhabited from the 1st to the 4th century. Remains of a pottery studio, a villa, a temple and a secondary traffic route that led from Belfort to Rougemont-le-Château, as well as numerous stray finds, have been discovered since the 19th century.

Offemont is first mentioned in a document in 1324. The place name could be derived from the Latin mons Iovis (mountain of Jupiter ). Initially under the influence of the Counts of Montbéliard , the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the mid-14th century. Together with the Sundgau , Offemont came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 Offemont has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. After the Franco-Prussian War , Fort du Mont Rudolphe was built at the end of the 19th century and formed part of the fortification ring around Belfort.

Saint-Augustin Church

In the area around Offemont there were several quarries where the red sandstone was extracted for the construction of houses and churches in the region (including the cathedral Saint-Christophe of Belfort ). At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, industrialization began in the village on the northern edge of Belfort. The metalworking industry was of particular importance. In 1913 Offemont was connected to the French railway network by a railway line that ran from Belfort to Rougemont-le-Château . However, operations were discontinued in 1948. Offemont has been a member of the Belfort agglomeration since 1973, which in 1999 became the Communauté d'Agglomération Belfortaine , which in turn became part of the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 . Until 2015 Offemont was the eponymous capital of the canton Offemont, which was dissolved that year .

Attractions

The Saint-Augustin church was built in 1846, and since then Offemont has formed its own parish. A wayside cross dates from 1712. In the old town center, some houses in the traditional style have been preserved, the oldest dating from 1688.

Many workers are also commuters who work in the other municipalities of the agglomerations of Belfort and Montbéliard .

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a departmental road that leads from Roppe to Valdoie. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around five kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Belfort and Denney. Offemont is connected to the city of Belfort by a bus line.
