Grosmagny (German earlier Großmenglatt ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Grosmagny lies at 470 m above sea level, about ten kilometers north of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends on a slope slightly to the south at the southern foot of the Vosges , on the edge of the Giromagny basin, which extends between the Vosges, the hills of the Forêt de Roppe and the Montagne de Salbert. It is located in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .

The area of the 9.46 km² large municipality includes a section in the area of the Vosges foothills. The southern part of the area is taken up by the plateau at the Vosges foot, which is on average 420 m. It consists partly of arable land and meadow, partly of forest, including the Forêt de la Chaume . The area is drained by the village stream Grippot and another stream to the south. Outside of the municipal ban, this water flows into the Rosemontoise , which in sections forms the western border. Along the Grippot and its side stream there are numerous ponds (including the Étang Hiver and the Étang Neuf ) that were once created for fish farming.

To the north, the community area extends over the slope of Grosmagny to the adjacent heights, which are mostly forested. On the ridge of the Fayé , the highest point of Grosmagny is reached at 915 m. This height belongs to the range of hills of the Baerenkopf which extends to the south .

Neighboring municipalities of Grosmagny are Rougegoutte in the north, Étueffont , Petitmagny and Anjoutey in the east, Éloie in the south and Chaux in the west.

history

Grosmagny was first mentioned in the 12th century under the name Aggrum Masnil . Initially under the influence of the Counts of Montbéliard , the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the mid-14th century. It was then part of the Rosemont dominion. Together with the Sundgau , Grosmagny came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 it belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. Today Grosmagny is merged with 13 other municipalities to form the municipal association Communauté de communes du Pays Sous Vosgien .

With 524 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Grosmagny is one of the small communities in the Territoire de Belfort department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (646 people were counted in 1881), the population has continued to grow steadily since the early 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Grosmagny was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), fish farming and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many employed people are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Belfort agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a departmental road that leads from Giromagny along the Vosges foot to Étueffont. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around eleven kilometers away. Another road connection is with Éloie.
