history

Larivière is first mentioned in 1322 under the name Ryefier . Over time, the spelling changed from La Rivière (1515) and Rivière (1579) to Larivière (since 1790). Initially under the influence of the lords of Montbéliard, Larivière came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the mid-14th century. Together with the Sundgau , the village came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Larivière has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department since 1793, but remained in France in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace . Since 1997, Larivière was initially part of the Communauté de communes du Tilleul , which was merged into the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 .

Larivière was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry until well into the 20th century. Today there are some local small businesses and a new commercial and industrial zone. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are also commuters who work in the agglomerations of Belfort and Mulhouse . Larivière is the location of a public preschool and elementary school ( École maternelle et élémentaire publique ).

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the departmental road that leads from Fontaine to Lachapelle-sous-Rougemont . The nearest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is about two kilometers away. Other road connections exist with Vauthiermont, Reppe, Lacollonge and Lagrange.
