Mairie Croix

Croix is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Croix is 600 m above sea level, about 14 kilometers southeast of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The former street-line village extends in the northern foothills of the Jura , in a position with great views on the Table Jura plateau of Croix, near the border with Switzerland . Croix is the southernmost commune of the Territoire de Belfort department.

The area of the 5.41 km² large municipality covers a section of the northern French Jura. The entire area is taken up by the Croix limestone plateau, which is an average of 590 m and shows only very slight differences in relief. The plateau is mainly made up of arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. There are no surface rivers here because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. At 612 m each, the highest peaks in the municipality are reached at the height of Croix and in the forest of Sous les Fontaines . East of the village is the headwaters of the Batte (left tributary of the Allaine ). To the west, the community area extends into the extensive forest area of Forêt Hollard .

Neighboring communities of Croix are Abbévillers and Vandoncourt in the west, Montbouton and Saint-Dizier-l'Évêque in the north, Villars-le-Sec in the northeast and the Swiss communities Bure in the east and Fahy in the south.

history

Croix was first mentioned in a document in 1232. At that time the church belonged to the Murbach monastery , which ceded its property to the Counts of Montbéliard in 1274. Since the beginning of the 14th century, the village was under the rule of Delle . In the first half of the 14th century, Croix came under the rule of the Habsburgs. Together with the Sundgau , it came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. From 1793 Croix belonged to the Haut-Rhin department . It was sacked by the Prussians in 1815. In 1871 the village remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort in contrast to the rest of Alsace with France.

Draw well

The Saint-Nicolas church was rebuilt in 1971 after a fire. In the center of the village there are some farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries. Two draw wells from 1772 are also worth seeing. The water tower, built in 1960, has the shape of a cross.

With 165 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Croix is one of the small municipalities of the Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (310 people were still counted in 1881), slight population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Croix was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns and in the Montbéliard agglomeration.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Abbévillers to Saint-Dizier-l'Évêque. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 15 kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Montbouton, Villars-le-Sec and Bure.
