Nicolaas Pieter "Nico" Claesen (born October 1, 1962 in Maasmechelen ) is a former Belgian football player and current coach .
Career
Claesen played for the clubs Patro Eisden in Mechelen, FC Seraing and Standard Liège . From 1984 to 1986 he played 29 Bundesliga games for VfB Stuttgart , in which he scored eleven goals. He then moved to Tottenham Hotspur in England, where he had 37 league appearances until 1988, in which he scored 16 goals. In 1988 he moved back to Belgium to play for Royal Antwerp . In Belgium he moved to Germinal Beerschot , later to Royal Antwerp, then to KV Oostende and Sint-Niklase SK. In 2000 he ended his career at KFC Beringen.
Claesen played 36 international matches for Belgium and scored twelve times. He participated in the 1986 and 1990 World Championships . In 1986 he was used in all seven games, scored three goals and finished fourth.
Claesen was a rather small player with 1.71 meters, whose ball skills and speed made him the ideal counter player. One of the skinny striker's weaknesses was his lack of tough tackle.
From 2006 he worked as a coach at Patro Maasmechelen, where he had also started his playing career. On May 18, 2008 he signed a three-year contract with the German-speaking club, Königliche Allgemeine Sportvereinigung Eupen ( KAS Eupen ), which was terminated on September 30, 2008.
