Recouvrance (German earlier Ruggenfrans ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Recouvrance is 347 m above sea level, about eleven kilometers southeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The scattered settlement extends in the plains of the Burgundian Gate ; in the basin of the Écrevisse brook shortly before the opening to the wide valley of the Bourbeuse .
The area of the 1.50 km² large municipal area includes a section of the gently undulating landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The central part of the area is crossed in an east-west direction by the valley basin of the Écrevisse, which provides drainage over the Bourbeuse to the Allaine . This almost 500 m wide basin is flanked on both sides by a plateau that averages 375 m. It is mostly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. In the valley of the Écrevisse and in the hollows of the plateau there are three ponds that were created for fish farming. To the south, the community area extends over the plateau to the edge of the Bois Lachat forest . The highest point in Recouvrance is reached here at 382 m.
Neighboring communities of Recouvrance are Brebotte in the west and north, Grosne in the east and Froidefontaine in the south.
history
Recouvrance is mentioned for the first time in writing in 1105 under the name Recouvrantia in a document of the Froidefontaine Priory. The name Recourance has been handed down from 1390 . Since the 12th century Recouvrance belonged to the County of Ferrette and was part of the parish of Grosne. In the first half of the 14th century the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. The fiefdom of Recouvrance fell in 1454 to the lords of Montjoie, who had a castle built here. Together with the Sundgau , Recouvrance came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 the village has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France.
Attractions
Some farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries in the traditional Franche-Comté style have been preserved. In addition, an old house was transferred to the Nancray Open Air Museum .

With 108 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Recouvrance is one of the smallest municipalities in the Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (82 people were still counted in 1881), slight population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Recouvrance was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), fish farming and forestry. The water power of the Écrevisse was previously used to operate a mill. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located away from the major road connections on a departmental road that leads from Brebotte to Grosne. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 13 kilometers away.
