Roppe (German earlier Rotbach and Roppach ) is a commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Roppe is located at 356 m above sea level, about six kilometers northeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends north of the Burgundian Gate , on the plateau south of the Forêt de Roppe below the Fort de Roppe in the foothills of the Vosges , on both sides of the Autruche.

The area of the 7.43 km² municipal area covers a section of the landscape in the northern area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The southern part of the area is taken up by the wide area at the foot of the Forêt de Roppe. This is drained by the Autruche to the south via the Bourbeuse to the Allaine . The plateau lies at an average of 360 m and is mostly covered with arable and meadow land. To the north, the community area extends into the hilly area of the Forêt de Roppe. It is almost entirely forested and extends on both sides of the Autruche reservoir. The entire area is designated as a shooting range. There are two military fortifications here, including Fort de Roppe, at the height of which, at 511 m, Roppe's highest point is reached.

Neighboring municipalities of Roppe are Anjoutey in the north, Eguenigue in the east, Phaffans and Denney in the south and Vétrigne and Éloie in the west.

history

Roppe was first mentioned in a document as early as 792. Initially under the influence of the Lords of Montbéliard, the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the middle of the 14th century.

Remains of Fort Roppe

Roppe was the seat of a lordship that included various villages in the area. Together with the Sundgau , Roppe came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 the village has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. Fort de Roppe was built from 1874 to 1887 and formed part of the fortification ring around Belfort. In the first half of the 20th century, Roppe was connected to the French railway network by a railway line that ran from Belfort to Rougemont-le-Château . Since 1976, Roppe has been part of the Belfort agglomeration, from which the Agglomération Belfortaine community association emerged in 1999 , which in turn was merged into the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 . Ecclesiastically, the village has always belonged to Phaffans.

Attractions

Various houses in the Sundgau style from the 18th and 19th centuries as well as beautiful village fountains have been preserved in the town center.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Roppe was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now various small and medium-sized businesses, including in the metalworking and transport industries. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are also commuters who work in the Belfort agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the main road N83, which leads from Belfort to Mulhouse . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around three kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Offemont, Phaffans and Eguenigue. Roppe is connected to the city of Belfort by a bus line.
