Petitefontaine (German formerly small fountain ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Petitefontaine is located 386 m above sea level, about 15 kilometers northeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The former street line village extends north of the Burgundian Gate , on the plateau in the foothills of the Vosges , in the wide valley basin on both sides of the Ruisseau de Saint-Nicolas .

The area of the 3.13 km² municipal area comprises a section of the landscape with only weak relief in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The central part of the area is crossed in a north-west-south-east direction by the valley plain of the Ruisseau de Saint-Nicolas, which has a width of about one kilometer. The stream drains the area via the Bourbeuse to the Allaine . The plain in the foothills of the Vosges lies at an average of 400 m. It is mainly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas. To the east the community area extends to the edge of the Herrenwald . At 412 m, the highest point in Petitefontaine is reached here. This hill forms the watershed between the catchment areas of the Rhone (in the west) and Rhine (in the east).

Neighboring municipalities of Petitefontaine are Leval in the north, Mortzwiller in the east, Lachapelle-sous-Rougemont and Felon in the south and Romagny-sous-Rougemont in the west.

history

Petitefontaine is first mentioned in a document in 1347. It belonged to the lordship of Rougemont-le-Château . In the middle of the 14th century, Petitefontaine came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. Together with the Sundgau , the village came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 it belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France and then moved from the canton of Masevaux to the canton of Rougemont-le-Château. Today, Petitefontaine is united with 13 other municipalities to form the Communauté de communes du Pays Sous Vosgien .

With 190 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Lachapelle-sous-Rougemont is one of the small municipalities of the Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (160 people were counted in 1906), the population has continued to grow again in recent years.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Petitefontaine was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are also commuters who work in the agglomerations of Belfort and Mulhouse .

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Lachapelle-sous-Rougemont to Rougemont-le-Château. The next connection to the Autoroute A 36 is about eight kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Felon and Lauw.
