geography

Morvillars is located 337 m above sea level, about eleven kilometers southeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the plain of the Burgundian Gate , in the valley level on both sides of the Allaine , on the northern edge of the Bois de la Voivre plateau.

The valley of the Allaine is flanked on both sides by gently rising slopes. In the north, the community soil extends to the hill on the edge of the Bois Lachat (up to 382 m). To the south, the municipal area extends with a narrow tip into the extensive wooded area of the Bois de la Voivre , which occupies the northern edge of the Tabular Jurassic areas. The highest point of Morvillars is reached here at 403 m.

Neighboring communities of Morvillars are Bourogne and Froidefontaine in the north, Grandvillars in the east and south and Méziré in the west.

history

Morvillars is first mentioned in a document in 1222. At that time, Morvillars belonged to the fiefdom of Grandvillars , but became a lordship in it. In the middle of the 14th century the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. Together with the Sundgau , Morvillars came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Industrialization began at the end of the 17th century. The noble La Bassinière family founded a forge and wire drawing shop, which later became the property of the Viellard and Migeon families. Since 1793 Morvillars belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort in contrast to the rest of Alsace with France. Morvillars was connected to the French railway network in 1868 when the Montbéliard – Morvillars railway was opened. In 1876, the line from Belfort to Delle was inaugurated. Since 2000, Morvillars was initially part of the Communauté d'Agglomération Belfortaine , which was merged into the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 .

Attractions

The Saint-Martin church, originally built in the Middle Ages, was rebuilt in the 19th century. Outside the village are the Château Armand Viellard (late 19th century) and other manufacturers' villas. Only a few remains of the former mansion are visible.

Economy and Infrastructure

Morvillars developed early into an industrial community. Larger industrial and commercial zones are located along the Allaine and on the border with Bourogne. The Société VMC-Pêche (Viellard, Migeon et Compagnie), which specializes in the manufacture of fishhooks, emerged from the iron processing industry. There is also a company in the transport industry and various small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the agglomerations of Belfort and Montbéliard .

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N19, which leads from Belfort to Delle. With the opening of the expressway from the A36 motorway to Delle, Morvillars was relieved of through traffic. The closest connection to the A36 is around eight kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Froidefontaine and Méziré. Morvillars is connected to Belfort by a bus line. Morvillars owns a train station on the Belfort – Delle railway line, which was reactivated on the December 9, 2018 timetable change .
