Mairie Menoncourt

Menoncourt (German earlier Mimingen ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Menoncourt is 376 m above sea level, about seven kilometers east-northeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends north of the Burgundian Gate , on the plateau south of the Forêt de Roppe in the foothills of the Vosges , between the streams of Ermite and Madeleine .

The area of the 4.70 km² municipal area includes a section of the landscape with only weak relief in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The main part of the area is taken up by a plateau, which averages 370 m and is very slightly inclined towards the south. It is mostly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. In the east, the municipal soil extends into the more than 500 m wide valley basin of the Madeleine, which provides drainage to the south via the Bourbeuse and the Allaine . In the far north, a wooded slope leads over to the Bois d'Eguenigue , the eastern part of the hilly area of the Forêt de Roppe . At 461 m, the highest point in Menoncourt is reached on the Mont .

The settlement of Les Errues (378 m) in the Madeleine valley on the eastern edge of the Forêt de Roppe belongs to Menoncourt . Neighboring municipalities to Menoncourt are Anjoutey and Saint-Germain-le-Châtelet in the north, Bethonvilliers in the east, Lacollonge and Phaffans in the south and Eguenigue in the west.

history

Menoncourt is first mentioned in a document in 1347 under the German name Muningen . The place name goes back to the Germanic personal name Muno and the Latin word cortis (court). Initially under the influence of the lords of Montbéliard, Menoncourt came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the mid-14th century. It belonged to the Rougemont lordship, but other lords also owned the area. Together with the Sundgau , the village came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 Menoncourt belonged to the department of Haut-Rhin , but remained in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort in contrast to the rest of Alsace with France. In the first half of the 20th century, the village was connected to the French railway network by a railway line that led from Belfort to Étueffont . Since 1997, Menoncourt has been a member of the Communauté de communes du Tilleul , which was merged into the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 .

With 390 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Menoncourt is one of the small municipalities of the Territoire de Belfort department. After the population had clearly decreased in the first half of the 20th century (298 people were still counted in 1886), strong population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s. Since then the number of inhabitants has more than doubled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Menoncourt was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. The water power of the Madeleine was previously used to operate mills. In addition, there are now various small and medium-sized businesses, especially in the construction and transport industries. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are also commuters who work in the Belfort agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a departmental road that leads from Roppe to Fontaine. The closest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is about five kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Bethonvilliers and Phaffans.
