Faverois (German earlier Faverach ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Faverois is located 380 m above sea level, three kilometers northeast of Delle and about 18 kilometers southeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends slightly higher on the northern edge of the valley of the Coeuvatte , in the transition area of the plains of the Burgundian Gate to the northern foothills of the Jura , near the border with Switzerland .
The area of the 6.50 km² municipal area includes a section of the slightly undulating landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The southern part of the area is crossed in an east-west direction by the approximately 500 m wide valley low of the Coeuvatte, which provides drainage to the Allaine . The valley is flanked in the south by the Saint-André plateau (up to 405 m). To the north, the community area extends into the valley of the village stream of Faverois and the adjacent plateaus, which culminate at 406 m at the highest point in the community. This plateau, located at an average of 400 m, is partly covered with arable land and meadow, partly with forest (especially the Grand Bois ). In hollows like in the Coeuvatte valley there are numerous ponds that were created for fish farming.
Neighboring communities of Faverois are Boron in the north, Florimont in the east and south and Delle and Joncherey in the west.
history
During the Roman period the important traffic route from Epomanduodurum ( Mandeure ) to Augusta Raurica crossed the municipality. The area west of the Dorfbach came to the Murbach Monastery in 728 through a donation from Count Eberhard von Alsace , which formed the basis for the later division of the local area. Faverois is first mentioned in a document in 1295. In the first half of the 14th century the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. The western part now belonged to the Delle rule, the eastern part to the Florimont rule.
During the Thirty Years War the village was sacked and devastated by Swedish troops. Together with the Sundgau , Faverois came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 Faverois belonged to the department of Haut-Rhin , but remained in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort in contrast to the rest of Alsace with France.
Attractions
The church Saint-Urs et Saint-Sébastien was built in 1727 and has a rich interior (see: List of Monuments historiques in Faverois ) in the style of the time of construction. Various houses from the 18th century have been preserved in the town center.

With 574 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Faverois is one of the small communities in the Territoire de Belfort. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 260 and 330 people, a significant increase in population was recorded, especially from 1950 to 1962. After a long period of stagnation, the number of inhabitants has shown an upward trend again in recent years.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Faverois was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), fish farming and forestry. In addition, there are now various local small businesses, including in the mechanical industry. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who work in Delle and in the agglomerations of Belfort and Montbéliard .
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D463 road from Delle to Saint-Louis . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 17 kilometers away. Other road connections exist with Delle and Suarce .
