Chavannes-les-Grands (German earlier Großschaffnatt ) is a commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chavannes-les-Grands lies at 369 m, about 15 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in the plains of the Burgundian Gate , in the hollow of the village stream west of the Suarcine valley .

The area of the 6.93 km² municipal area includes a section of the gently undulating landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort). The area is subdivided by several bodies of water running in a south-north direction, of which the Suarcine is the most important and provides drainage to the Allaine . It takes up the Lutter (forms the eastern border on a short stretch of road), the village stream of Chavannes and two other side streams, albeit outside the municipality. Slight hills rise between the almost parallel valley hollows, which, however, seldom rise above the adjacent valley floor by more than 20 m. At 385 m, the highest point of Chavannes-les-Grands is reached south of the village. The area is mainly covered with arable land and meadows, but also shows some larger forest areas. To the west, the municipality extends into the forests of Bois du Flandrier and Bois de Ragie de la Dame . In hollows and valleys there are various ponds that were created for fish farming.

Neighboring communities of Chavannes-les-Grands are Magny in the north, Manspach and Altenach in the east, Chavanatte and Florimont in the south and Vellescot , Bretagne and Montreux-Jeune in the West.

history

Chavannes-les-Grands is first mentioned in a document in 1291. In the first half of the 14th century the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs, whereupon the place name was Germanized to Groß-Schaffnatt. Together with the Sundgau , Chavannes-les-Grands came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 the village has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France.

With 338 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Chavannes-les-Grands is one of the small municipalities of the Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (436 people were still counted in 1886), population growth was recorded again from 1950 to 1980. Since then, the number of inhabitants has remained at an almost constant level.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chavannes-les-Grands was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), fish farming and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area and in the Belfort agglomeration.

The village is located off the major road connections on a department road that leads from Delle to Dannemarie . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 16 kilometers away. There are further road connections with Chavanatte and Montreux-Château.
