The Suarcine (German Schwertzelen or Schwartzbächle ) is a small river in France that runs through the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and Grand Est regions. It rises in the municipality of Réchésy , generally drains in a north-westerly direction and flows as a left tributary into the Ruisseau de Saint-Nicolas after 20 kilometers . On his way he crosses the Territoire-de-Belfort and Haut-Rhin departments . In its estuary section it runs parallel to the Rhine-Rhône Canal and is also used to supply its water.
course
The headwaters of the Suarcine are located in the gently undulating landscape of the Burgundian Gate on the northern edge of the Jura , in the extensive forest of the Bois de Gerschwiller . For the first 13 kilometers, the Suarcine flows northwest through an agricultural area. About five kilometers further to the northeast, the Largue runs parallel to the Suarcine, but belongs to the catchment area of the Rhine . The plateau-like hill in between, which rarely exceeds 400 m, thus forms the main watershed between the Rhône and the Rhine.
The open valley basin of the Suarcine fits into the gently undulating landscape between the Jura and the Vosges . The flat valley floor is approximately 500 meters wide. To the east of the municipalities of Montreux-Vieux and Montreux-Jeune , the Suarcine reaches the depression, which, like a drainage channel, receives the streams coming from the Jura and the Vosges and leads them southwest to the Doubs . The Rhine-Rhône Canal runs in this depression. Here the Suarcine turns with a sharp curve to the southwest. With the Lutter (today actually flows directly into the canal) and the Reppe (also called Loutre in the upper reaches ), it takes in its most important tributaries shortly after one another (both right tributaries). At an altitude of 339 m in the wide valley south of Montreux-Château , the Suarcine flows into the Ruisseau de Saint-Nicolas , which is named Bourbeuse a short time later after the confluence with the Madeleine .

Hydrology
The Suarcine has a pluvial discharge regime with strongly fluctuating water levels. Floods can occur in the winter months and in spring when there is heavy rainfall in combination with snowmelt, and in the further course of the year with heavy thunderstorms or prolonged rainfall. In the catchment area of the Suarcine there are numerous ponds, only a few of which are of natural origin. Most were created for fish farming since the 16th century.
