Mairie Felon

Felon is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Felon is located at 388 m, about twelve kilometers northeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The former street row village extends north of the Burgundian Gate , on the plateau in the foothills of the Vosges , east of the Margrabant stream.

The area of the 4.11 km² municipal area comprises a section of the landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort) with only weak relief. The main part of the area is occupied by the plateau in the Vosges foothills, which is an average of 390 m. It is mostly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas. The plateau is drained by the Margrabant and a side stream to the south to the Ruisseau de Saint-Nicolas . In the valley there are several ponds that were once created for fish farming. In the far north-west the municipal area extends up the slope of the Châtelet, a foothill of the Vosges. At 520 m, the highest elevation of Felon is reached at the wooded height.

Neighboring municipalities of Felon are Romagny-sous-Rougemont and Petitefontaine in the north, Lachapelle-sous-Rougemont in the east, Angeot in the south and Saint-Germain-le-Châtelet in the west.

history

Felon is first mentioned in a document in 1227 under the name Vuolon . Over time, the spelling changed from Furlon (1235) and Foulon (1565) to Felon (since 1585). The origin of the village could be a fulling mill (French moulin à foulon ). Felon belonged to the lordship of Rougemont-le-Château . In the middle of the 14th century the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. Together with the Sundgau , Felon came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 it belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. In 1984 the village moved from the canton of Fontaine to the canton of Rougemont-le-Château. Today Felon is united with 13 other communities to form the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Sous-Vosgien .
