Petitmagny (German earlier Kleinmenglatt ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Petitmagny is 481 m above sea level, about ten kilometers north-northeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends in a hilly area in the southern foreland of the Vosges , in the hollow of a right side stream of the Madeleine , at the southern foot of the Fayé.
The area of the 2.20 km² large municipality covers a section in the area of the Vosges foothills. The area is drained by the Dorfbach eastwards to the Madeleine. It is partly used for agricultural purposes through arable land and meadows, partly there are larger forest areas. To the north, the community area extends up the predominantly wooded slope of the Fayé . The highest point of Petitmagny is reached on its southern flank at 880 m.
Neighboring communities of Petitmagny are Étueffont in the east and south and Grosmagny in the west.
history
Petitmagny is first mentioned in a document in 1417. At that time it belonged to the lordship of Rosemont. In the middle of the 14th century, the Petitmagny area came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. Together with the Sundgau , the village came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 it belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. Today Petitmagny is united with 13 other municipalities to form the municipal association Communauté de communes du Pays Sous Vosgien . Ecclesiastically, the village belongs to the parish of Étueffont.

With 298 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Petitmagny is one of the small communities in the Territoire de Belfort department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (249 people were counted in 1896), strong population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s. Since then the number of inhabitants has almost tripled.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Petitmagny was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many employed people are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Belfort agglomeration.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a departmental road that leads from Giromagny along the Vosges foot to Étueffont. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around ten kilometers away.
