Vescemont is located 476 m above sea level, two kilometers east of Giromagny and about twelve kilometers north of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The area is drained by the Rosemontoise, which flows south parallel to the Savoureuse and only flows into it north of Belfort.

To the north, the municipality extends into the valley of the Rosemontoise, which is surrounded by the wooded heights of the southern Vosges (southern foothills of the Ballon d'Alsace ). On the northwest side are the Mont Jean (786 m) and the Mont Rouchon with the Forêt de Sapins , on which the highest point of Vescemont is reached at 988 m. The eastern flank of the valley is bordered by the Forêt de Saint-André and the Tête du Mineur (up to 900 m).

Vescemont includes the hamlet of Planche-le-Prêtre (510 m) in the Rosemontoise valley and a few individual farms. Neighboring communities of Vescemont are Lepuix and Riervescemont in the north, Lamadeleine-Val-des-Anges in the east, Rougegoutte in the south and Giromagny in the west.

history

Numerous Roman coins were found in the municipality of Vescemont, which indicates a very early inspection and possible settlement of the area. The village presumably existed since the 11th century, but it was first mentioned in a document in 1347. The names Wessemberg and Wissemont are documented from this time . Initially under the influence of the Counts of Montbéliard , the village came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the mid-14th century. It had belonged to the Rosemont rule since the 11th century. The Lords of Rosemont gave the village to a noble family called Wessemberg.

Together with the Sundgau , Vescemont came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 it belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. Today Vescemont is a member of the eight municipalities community association Communauté de communes la Haute Savoureuse .

After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (629 people were still counted in 1891), since the mid-1960s a continuous increase in population has been recorded. The settlement area of Vescemont has now grown together with those of Giromagny and Rougegoutte.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Vescemont was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses, including wood processing. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many employed people are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Belfort agglomeration.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Giromagny to Riervescemont. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 15 kilometers away. Another road connection exists with Rougegoutte.
