The Rosemontoise is an approximately 18 km long left tributary of the Savoureuse in the catchment area of the Rhône , in the French department Territoire de Belfort in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region . The river name is derived from the medieval castle Rosemont (German: Rosenfels) in the southern Vosges .
geography
The source of the Rosemontoise is located in the municipal district of Riervescemont , to about 950 meters, on the south side of the comb, between the heights of Trémontkopf and Baerenkopf , one from the balloon d'Alsace -reaching southeast mountain range. The mountain stream descends steeply for the first few kilometers before it reaches the Riervescemont basin. He leaves this through the narrow point at the ruins of Rosemont to the southwest.
The valley then widens, and at Vescemont, east of Giromagny , the Rosemontoise emerges from the Vosges into a wide basin in which a thick layer of gravel and fine sediments (so-called alluvions ) has been deposited over time. The river, oriented in north-south direction, now only has a gradient of about 1% (10 meters by 1 kilometer). It flows through the basin parallel to the Savoureuse. At Éloie on the southern edge of the basin, it receives the most important tributary, the Verdoyeux . The Rosemontoise turns here to the southwest, follows the edge of the forest heights of the Forêt de Roppe and flows into the Savoureuse at Valdoie a few kilometers north of Belfort at an altitude of 370 m.
Hydrology
The Rosemontoise has a pluvial runoff regime with strongly fluctuating water levels. Floods can occur in the winter months and in spring during the snowmelt in the Vosges and later in the year during strong thunderstorms or prolonged rainfall. The headwaters in the area of the Ballon d'Alsace is one of the wettest regions in France with 240 cm of precipitation per year. Various stream barriers and dams were built to minimize the risk of flooding. When a dam broke on December 30, 2001, parts of Éloie and Valdoie were flooded. In the catchment area of the Rosemontoise there are numerous ponds, only a few of which are of natural origin. Most were created for fish farming since the 16th century.
