Giromagny ( German outdated Schermenei ) is a French commune with 3,064 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Territoire de Belfort department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region .
geography
The municipality of Giromagny is located in the Savoureuse valley at the foot of the Vosges , about twelve kilometers north of Belfort and nine kilometers south of the Alsatian Belchen . The municipality is part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .
history
In 1347 the place was first mentioned as Gut Rosemont when it passed to the Habsburgs . For a long time the farming village was administered by the neighboring village of Vescemont and belonged to the parish of Rougegoutte . The place gained in importance since the 16th century, as the Habsburg administration made it the place of jurisdiction for the mines in Alsace and Sundgau in 1561 . Since the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, Giromagny has finally belonged to France and has been the capital of the canton of the same name since 1790 . In 1791 Rosemont was confiscated and - after the revolution - its mines were nationalized.
