Angeot (German earlier Ingelsod ) is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Angeot is located at 367 m, about 13 kilometers northeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends north of the Burgundian Gate , on the plateau in the foothills of the Vosges , on the western edge of the wide basin of the Ruisseau de Saint-Nicolas .

The area of the 6.56 km² municipal area comprises a section of the landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort) with only weak relief. The central part of the area is crossed in a north-south direction by the valley level of the Ruisseau de Saint-Nicolas, which has a width of almost one kilometer. The stream drains the area via the Bourbeuse to the Allaine . The plain in the Vosges foothills lies at an average of 380 m. It is mainly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. In the west, the community area extends over the plateau, which is divided by two parallel side streams (including the Margrabant) of the Ruisseau de Saint-Nicolas, to the hill of Bethonvilliers. To the east, the terrain rises slightly to the wooded plateau of the Haut-Bois , on which the highest elevation of Angeot is reached at 417 m. This plateau forms the watershed between the catchment areas of the Rhone (in the west) and Rhine (in the east).

Neighboring municipalities of Angeot are Felon and Lachapelle-sous-Rougemont in the north, Eteimbes in the east, Vauthiermont and Larivière in the south and Lagrange and Saint-Germain-le-Châtelet in the west.

history

Angeot is first mentioned in a document in 1234. At that time it already had a church that was the center of a large parish. In the 13th century, Angeot belonged to the County of Ferrette , which gave the village as a fief to a local noble family. In the middle of the 14th century, Angeot came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs and at that time bore the German name Ingelsott . Together with the Sundgau , the village came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Angeot became the capital of a bailiwick that consisted of two dairies with a total of eight communities. Since 1793 the village has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France. Since 1997, Angeot was initially merged with 12 other municipalities to form the Communauté de communes du Tilleul , which was merged into the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 .

Saint-Sébastien church

The church was rebuilt from 1840 to 1843 on the site of the former manor house, with the bell tower being renewed in 1862. In the cemetery there are old graves and a cross from around 1800.

population

With 345 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Angeot is one of the small municipalities in the Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (351 people were still counted in 1886), the population has continued to grow again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Angeot was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now a few local small businesses and a transport company. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are also commuters who work in the agglomerations of Belfort and Mulhouse .

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located near the main road N83, which leads from Belfort to Mulhouse. The next connection to the Autoroute A 36 , which crosses the municipality, is about five kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Fontaine and Vauthiermont.
