Bavilliers is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It has been the capital of the newly created canton of Bavilliers since 2015 .

geography

Bavilliers is located at 355 m above sea level, about three kilometers southwest of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The second largest agglomeration municipality of Belfort extends in the hill country west of Belfort, on both sides of the Douce, which emerges here into a wide valley, on the eastern edge of the ridge of the Côte.

The area of the 4.80 km² large municipality covers a section of the gently undulating landscape in the western area of the Burgundian gate (Trouée de Belfort). The southern part of the area is occupied by the Douce valley, which is 350 m on average and around one kilometer wide. The Douce enters this valley from the northwest, flowing through a valley sunk into the limestone plateau. In this valley, part of the water in the Trou de la Dame seeps away , only to reappear after a 150 m run in the village. The Douce drains the area to the southeast to the Savoureuse and thus to the Allan . She is accompanied by the waterway of the Canal de la Haute-Saône , a branch of the Rhine-Rhône Canal .

To the east of the Douce, the municipal area extends to the plateau (up to 375 m), which leads to the Belfort basin, and to the edge of the Grand Bois forest . To the west, the municipality extends over a gently rising slope onto the broad ridge of the Côte, which is partly covered with arable land and meadow, partly with forest . Here, at 433 m, the highest point in Bavilliers is reached.

Neighboring municipalities of Bavilliers are Essert and Belfort in the north, Danjoutin in the east, Andelnans and Argiésans in the south and Urcerey in the west.

history

The municipal area of Bavilliers was settled very early. During excavations, a mosaic and numerous brick fragments from Gallo-Roman times were discovered. Bavilliers is first mentioned in a document in 1140 under the name Basvyllis . The place name originally goes back to Latin ( Bassis Villis ) and means something like lower, lower-lying village / homestead . The names Baveler and Basvelier come from a later period .

Initially under the influence of the lords of Montbéliard, Bavilliers came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs in the mid-14th century and belonged to the Belfort rule. Together with the Sundgau , the village came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Bavilliers has belonged to the Haut-Rhin department since 1793, but remained in France in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace . Bavilliers has been part of the Belfort agglomeration since 1973, which in 1999 became the Communauté d'Agglomération Belfortaine , which in turn became part of the Communauté d'agglomération Grand Belfort in 2017 .

Attractions

The Saint-Ambroise church was rebuilt from 1846 to 1850 and replaced the late medieval church on today's cemetery grounds. Only a few remains of the former mansion are visible. The manors Château du Chênois and Château de la Charmeuse date from the 19th century. The Parc du Chênois serves as a local recreation area for Belfort. The Trou de la Dame (infiltration point in the Douce) is one of the natural attractions of the village.

With 4726 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Bavilliers is one of the largest municipalities in the Territoire de Belfort. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 1400 and 1700 people, strong population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1950s, with the largest growth rates occurring between 1968 and 1975 and again in the 1980s. Since 1950 the number of inhabitants has tripled. The settlement area of Bavilliers has now seamlessly merged with those of Belfort and Essert.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until the 20th century, Bavilliers was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In the course of time, commercial and industrial zones developed on the border with Belfort and at the southern exit of the town. Today, numerous small and medium-sized businesses are located in the municipality, with precision engineering, electrical industry, transport and construction, food processing, the distribution of pharmaceutical products, advertising and a factory producing garage doors being the most important sectors. There are also many retail shops for daily needs. Many workers are also commuters who work in the other municipalities of the agglomerations of Belfort and Montbéliard . Bavilliers is the location of two colleges and a vocational school as well as a psychiatric clinic.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N83, which leads from Belfort to Héricourt . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around two kilometers away. Bavilliers is connected to Belfort by two bus routes. Belfort Central Station on the route from Mulhouse to Montbéliard or Vesoul and Paris is easy to reach.
