Leval is a French commune in the department Territoire de Belfort in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Leval is 410 m above sea level, about 14 kilometers northeast of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The former street-line village extends north of the Burgundian Gate , on the plateau in the foothills of the Vosges , on the Ruisseau de Saint-Nicolas .
The area of the 6.00 km² municipal area comprises a section of the landscape in the area of the Burgundian Gate (Trouée de Belfort) with only weak relief. The central part of the area is crossed in a north-west-south-east direction by the valley plain of the Ruisseau de Saint-Nicolas, which has a width of about one kilometer. The stream drains the area via the Bourbeuse to the Allaine . The level in the foothills of the Vosges is an average of 420 m. It is mainly covered with arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas. In the west the parish reaches to the foot of the heights of the Bois du Châtelet . To the east of the Ruisseau de Saint-Nicolas, there are numerous ponds ( Étangs des Charmottes ) in the plateau's slight hollows , which were once created for fish farming and are now partly used as bathing lakes. In the far north the municipal area extends at the foot of the Vosges Heights. The highest elevation of Leval is reached here at 456 m. The eastern border runs on a hill which forms the watershed between the catchment areas of the Rhone (in the west) and the Rhine (in the east).
Neighboring municipalities of Leval are Rougemont-le-Château and Masevaux in the north, Mortzwiller in the east, Petitefontaine in the south and Romagny-sous-Rougemont in the west.
history
Leval is first mentioned in documents in 1502. It belonged to the lordship of Rougemont-le-Château . In the middle of the 14th century, the Leval area came under the sovereignty of the Habsburgs. Together with the Sundgau , the village came to the French crown with the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Since 1793 it belonged to the Haut-Rhin department , but in 1871 it remained as part of the Territoire de Belfort, unlike the rest of Alsace, in France and then moved from the canton of Masevaux to the newly founded canton of Rougemont-le-Château . Today Leval is united with 13 other communities to form the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Sous Vosgien . Ecclesiastically it belongs to the parish of Rougemont-le-Château.

With 241 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Leval is one of the small municipalities of the Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (311 people were still counted in 1896), only slight fluctuations were recorded from the 1930s on, before a noticeable increase has taken place more recently.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Leval was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and above all cattle and cattle breeding), fish farming and forestry. In addition, there are now a few local small-scale businesses and traditionally a wide range of horses (horse breeding, horse pastures, etc.). In the meantime, the village, which borders the Rougemont-le-Château golf course, with many weekend houses and ponds (Etangs) has developed from a pure residential community into a leisure region (for sports such as hiking, fishing, swimming or horse riding and golf). Many of today's employed people are also commuters who work themselves in the agglomerations of Belfort and Mülhausen or in the border region to Germany or Switzerland or in German- or French-speaking Switzerland .
The village of Leval is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Lachapelle-sous-Rougemont to Rougemont-le-Château. The next connection to the Autoroute A 36 is about 15 kilometers away. The connection to the Route Nationale (expressway) from Belfort to Mulhouse can be reached in five minutes. Another road connection is with Romagny-sous-Rougemont. A section of the Camino de Santiago (hiking trail 1b) also leads through Leval towards Saint-Nicolas, the other part (1a) to Angeot.
