Location of the canton of Masevaux in the Haut-Rhin department

The canton of Masevaux is a French constituency in the arrondissements of Altkirch and Thann-Guebwiller in the Haut-Rhin department and in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).

history

The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the départements as part of what was then the "Belfort District". With the founding of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, the canton was redesigned as part of what was then the Belfort arrondissement. From 1871 to 1919 there was no further subdivision of the former Masmünster district . From June 28, 1919 to March 2015, the canton was part of the Thann arrondissement. Since the reorganization of the cantons in 2015, the municipalities have been partly in the Arrondissement Altkirch and partly in the Arrondissement Thann-Guebwiller.

On March 22, 2015, the canton was enlarged from 15 to 62 communes due to the reorganization of the cantons. The municipality of Bourbach-le-Haut , which belonged to the canton until 2015 , moved to the canton of Cernay . In addition to the remaining 14 municipalities of the previous canton of Masevaux, there were all 30 municipalities of the canton Dannemarie , 11 of the 24 municipalities of the canton Hirsingue , 3 of the 11 municipalities of the canton Cernay (Bernwiller, Burnhaupt-le-Bas and Burnhaupt-le-Haut), 2 of the 27 communities in the canton of Altkirch (Ballersdorf and Eglingen) and 1 community each from the cantons of Ferrette (Mooslargue) and Thann (Guewenheim).

Today's canton of Masevaux borders the canton of Cernay in the north and northeast , the canton Kingersheim in the east, the canton Altkirch in the east and southeast, the department Territoire de Belfort in the south, southwest and west and the Département Vosges in the west and northwest .

Until the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons in March 2015, the canton Masevaux included the 15 municipalities of Bourbach-le-Haut , Dolleren , Kirchberg , Lauw , Masevaux , Mortzwiller , Niederbruck , Oberbruck , Rimbach-près-Masevaux , Sentheim , Sewen , Sickert , Soppe -le-Bas , Soppe-le-Haut and Wegscheid . Its layout corresponded to an area of ​​134.67 km ² . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 6815.

politics

In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the five voting pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, the team Fabienne Orlandi – Rémi With (both UD) won against Claudia Noletta – Sébastien Schoettel (both FN ) with a share of the vote of 64.07% (voter turnout: 50.03%).
