Sewen is a French commune with 501 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Thann-Guebwiller , the canton Masevaux and the municipality association Vallée de la Doller et Soultzbach .
geography
The municipality of Sewen is located at the foot of the Alsatian Belchen ( Ballon d'Alsace ) in the Vosges , to which the main road of the village leads up. The municipality is located in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park . The Doller rises in the municipality . Sewen is the westernmost municipality in the Haut-Rhin department. On the southwest flank of the Alsatian Belchen lies the "Vierländereck" - this is where the four departments of Vosges , Haut-Rhin, Haute-Saône and Territoire de Belfort meet. The four-country corner forms part of the Rhine-Rhône watershed .
The hamlets of Alfeld, Hinteralfeld and Lerchenmatt belong to the community . The Alfelder See ( Lac d'Alfeld ), a 9.2 hectare reservoir that was built between 1884 and 1887 serves primarily to balance the water balance in the river system (protection against flooding and drying out). It is run by the département. Another lake in the municipality is Sewener See ( Lac de Sewen ). The two lakes are also the origin of the name of the municipality, which is derived from the Celtic words lake and Ven and means "not far from the lake".
Neighboring municipalities of Sewen are Dolleren and Oberbruck in the east, Riervescemont in the south, Lepuix and Plancher-les-Mines (point of contact) in the south-west and Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle in the north-west.
history
From 1871 until the end of the First World War Sewen belonged as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine to the German Empire and was assigned to the district of Thann in the district of Upper Alsace .
