Wuenheim ( German  Wünheim ) is a French commune with 799 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Thann-Guebwiller , the Canton of Guebwiller and the Région de Guebwiller municipal association .

geography

The municipality of Wuenheim lies on the edge of the Vosges . The Wuenheimerbach , fed by the mountain streams Gutenbach and Kaltenbach , enters the Upper Rhine Plain here . In the southwest of the municipality, the highest point is reached in Hartmannswillerkopf at 956 m. The territory of the municipality is part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .

Neighboring communities of Wuenheim are Jungholtz in the north, Soultz-Haut-Rhin in the east, Hartmannswiller in the south, Wattwiller in the southwest and the Forêt Reculée de Soultz , an enclave of the municipality of Soultz-Haut-Rhin, in the west.

history

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Wuenheim belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Gebweiler district in the Upper Alsace district .

Parish partnership

There is a community partnership with Grävenwiesbach . The initiator was the entrepreneur Josef Grünewald , who ran a company in Wuenheim from 1941 to 1945 and in Grävenwiesbach from 1946. Josef Grünewald is an honorary citizen of Wuenheim.
