Soppe-le-Bas (German Niedersulzbach ) is a French commune with 763 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the canton of Masevaux and the municipal association Vallée de la Doller et Soultzbach .
geography
Soppe-le-Bach is located in the west of Alsace in Sundgau , twelve kilometers southwest of Cernay and 9.5 kilometers southeast of Masevaux , between the neighboring communities of Diefmatten in the southeast and Soppe-le-Haut in the northwest.
history
Soppe-le-Bas was first mentioned in 1105 as Suspa . In 1185 it was called Sulcebach , in 1302 Sulzebach Inferior . Sulze or sulza was the Old High German word for " salt water ". The place name meant "mineral stream". The village belonged to the Seigneurie Thann , which in turn belonged to the Holy Roman Empire from 1324 to 1648 under the rule of the Habsburgs . From 1648 until the French Revolution (1789–1799) Soppe-le-Bas belonged to the Duchy of Rethel . The municipality was awarded the Croix de guerre (1914-1918), a total of 2952 municipalities received this order between 1917 and 1926.

Attractions
An original Saint-Vincent church was built in the 14th century. In 1706 the church was rebuilt and redesigned in 1772. The bell tower was repaired in 1784. In 1829 and 1837 the choir and the nave were rebuilt and enlarged again. The organ of the church was constructed in 1842 by Valentin Rinkenbach. In 1946, Georges Schwenkedel switched the organ to electrical operation. It was classified as a Monument historique in 1980 .
economy
The main occupations of the Bas-Soppois (residents) are forestry , arable farming , fruit growing , dairy farming and the breeding of domestic cattle and domestic pigs .
