Attractions

Sankt-Pantaleon in Gueberschwihr with Romanesque bell tower (12th century)

The Sankt-Pantaleon church looks a bit big for the place. Only the impressive 36 meter high bell tower with a typical Alsatian gable roof is still there from the Romanesque building that was commissioned in the 12th century by the knight Burkhard von Gueberschwihr, the founder of the Abbey of Marbach. The rest of the church was later destroyed and only rebuilt in the 19th century by Jean-Baptiste Schacre in the style of the tower buildings of Murbach and Saint Sebastian in Soultzmatt, slightly shifted to one side in the neo-Romanesque style. As a result, the imposing Romanesque tower with the initially paired, later three-part open window arches almost looks like a campanile .
